Posties Take it by 19 Minutes But Miss Setting A New Post Record
A great job well done by everyone. What great fun. I have been informed
that just about everyone signed up again for next year. The weather could not have been
more accommodating and despite Judy Lloyds "Indy 500" spin-out on leg one,
there was a full recovery and nobody was denied support anywhere. But I must say that
phone call at 6:15am on race morning I received from Lisa, looking for her team
captains phone number, certainly sounded ominous. A great big thanks to Standby
runner Paul Bowden for really giving the POSTIES a boost by filling in the last minute.
Of course despite the best plans, in the excitement, crazy things do happen. The most
notable is the fact that Long Islanders really have a lot of things going on. The Syosset
Fire Department was staging an open house for the community with firemen repelling down
the side of their 3-story firehouse, kids blowing sirens on the fire trucks that were
roaring up and down main street, and our 50 miler running right through the middle. The
South Woods Road handoff was in front of a pumpkin patch with hundreds of family members
jumping around picking out there Halloween special. And as usual, at the Cold Spring
Harbor Boat Dock handoff there were boat trailers and paddlers intermingling with our
runners each finding a way to get around the other, no sweat. And so it went right up to
party time as both teams lined up to cheer in our last runner, Dave Lloyd; everyone in
under 7 hours. And
One thing is for sure, we all agreed that if it wasnt for the POSTIES
giving them an incentive the POST ONE ADVISORS would never had beaten seven hours.
As for the party, the Tents would have kept us dry if it has rained but there obviously
was a big problem with the service. The logistics of feeding over 1,000 runners in an
hours time seemed to elude the caterers. As it neared 6 pm there were still people
who had not been fed yet and forget about seconds. It is disappointing in that a
substantial part of our registration fee is for this amenity. It was the same caterers
that ran last years party where they had indoor kitchens. This year those facilities were
being renovated and the food had to be cooked on an outdoor charcoal grill which seemed to
take forever. It is safe to say that a good number of runners had not had much to eat
since the night before although I did see a few teams with bagels. Next year I plan on
bringing my own food along. For a great many runners the ample supply of beer seemed to
make up for the lack of food and the great live band music kept them dancing and warm. The
waning sun and breeze sure raised a chill and jackets were welcome.
The POST ONE EXPLORERS team members at the party signed their baton which was
presented to Robert Meyerson a team member for the past 5 years. The POST ONE ADVISORS
and the POSTIES both turned in super times but failed to beat the POST ONE
ADVISORS 1994 time nor its 1995 record time of 6:35:31. The runners in the 1995
POST ONE ADVISORS team were Dawson Hunter, Glen Malings, Bill Fabisiak, Peter Salzer,
Robert Meyerson, Shelly Thompson, Kevin Hunter and Dave Lloyd. |
